Morris Yachts M52 Design 2727

The M52 was conceived as a big sister to the M-Series lineup. Shes built with the philosophy of a daysailer but more than capable of cruising. Hull number 1 has been launched and the sailing performance can only be described as stunning, as are her classic looks.

Shes got a beautiful raised panel Herreshoff interior, expertly executed by the joiner-men at Morris Maine boat building facility.

The boat comes with a base price of approximately $1.325MUS, which is a lot of value compared to production boats of her class or the cost of a custom one-off. The boat is very powered up and comes delivered complete with all of the accoutrement one expects of a modern performance boat such as carbon rig, carbon spade rudder and bulb keel. Used Jon Boats

Used Jon Boats

A jon boat (or johnboat[1]) is a flat-bottomed boat constructed of aluminum, fiberglass, or wood with one, two, or three bench seats. They are particularly useful for hunting due to the greater stability as compared to a V-hull boat. They are quite suitable for fishing as well. Because the hull of a jon boat is nearly flat, it tends to ride over the waves rather than cut through them as a V-hull might, thus limiting the use of the boat to calmer waters. Jon boats typically have a transom onto which an outboard motor can be mounted. They are simple and easy to maintain, and inexpensive with many options to upgrade. Typical options might include live wells/bait wells, side or center consoles, factory installed decks and floors, electrical wiring, accessory pads/mountings, casting and poling platforms.
Jon boats with beefed up aluminum construction, and powered by jet-drive outboards, are capable of operating in extremely shallow water and thus are used frequently in rocky rivers and areas with submerged obstructions such as oyster bars and coral.
Jon boats are available commercially between 8 and 24 feet (2.4 and 7.3 m) long and 32 to 60 inches (81 to 150 cm) wide, though custom sizes may be found. The simple design includes an open hull, without a bilge, leaving the ribs exposed. Many individuals choose to cover the ribs, producing a flat, level surface.
The Wasserwacht branch of the German Red Cross has chosen jon boats for their civil protection units for used during floods.

Sheers Completed!!

This is just a short update. The title says it all. Last night I stayed up late and finished laminating the starboard sheer into position. Late today, I sanded down the excess glue. The sheers are completed except for fairing and possibly adding reinforcement later in the fairing process.

The longitudinal pieces of the boat have been a challenge physically for me and I am glad that it is done. The best part, of course, is that the boat has a definite shape now. The long pieces really define the shape and its very satisfying to me to see all this come together.

So without further ado here are the few photos I have for this update.

The first photo shows the cut at the scarf joint for the second lamination. The first laminations scarf joint is further aft between the next set of frames. I did not want the scarf joints on the two laminations to overlap each other so I moved the second laminations joint further forward. This photo was before the scarf joint was made. Since Ive shown this process before, I did not include new photos of that process in this update.

And these last two photos show the glue up in process last night. This was actually quite stressful as it was after midnight, I was tired, and it was still quite warm in the garage. The epoxy was kicking off fairly quick so I had to work very fast, hence the stress.

So I have a variety of small tasks to accomplish, mostly related to cleaning up glue and touching up encapsulation before I begin the next phase of the build, namely fairing the hull. I wont go into that process now but it is a lot of work required to get the hull ready for planking.

So thats it for now. Take care.

Design 1828 Elske

These images dont do this beautiful yawl justice. Elske was constructed of wood as her bright finish attests by the Walsted Baadevaert of Denmark. She was launched in 1967. Elske is a rather heavy boat but was designed with emphasis on cruising comfort and seagoing ability. Her scantlings are conservative for example using teak for the keelson and deadwood, yet she has proven herself to be a fast boat.

Her lines were developed by the talented Germán Frers, Jr. during his brief time with S&S while her profile, interior arrangement and sail plans were developed by the equally talented Gerhard Gilgenast. Gilgenast had started at S&S in 1964 and Frers the following year. Each would go on to open their own design studios.

Here are the plans.
